Mavericks Smoked Chicken Cubano in a Cargo Box

After a year of searching for the World's best last sandwich, I have finally progressed to the next level.  Eating a sandwich is more than taste, it is about a feeling, a moment in time that is captured in our memory forever.

So, the other day, I was traveling on the LRT (Light Rail Transit) on my way to the ocean, when we stopped in an isolated area in Dansui, Taiwan.  As I looked out the window, there was a faint outline of a brightly blue painted cargo container surrounded by tables and chairs.  In that moment, just before the doors closed, I lept off the train and peered over the platform to take a closer look.  To my suprise, it was a Cargo Box Cubano Cafe', with a broadway style sign on top with the name "Maverick Cubano".

Hidden Paradise

So, after a minute of consideration, I decided to take the elevator down to the main level, crossed a busy street, and trekked up a winding gravel road.  It was a surreal experience, to say the least.  There was nothing else around, other than some commercial businesses, which were also built in cargo boxes.  As I walked up to the Maverick Cubano Cafe', there was a gentleman in a chef's apron and hat standing behing the counter.  "Are you open?", I asked.  "Of course, we are always open, " he replied.  So, I looked at the menu, and chose the Smoked Chicken Cuban Sandwich.  In my experience, anything smoked is usually good 90% of the time.

It took him about 10 minutes to prepare the sandwich, and he really took great care,  even lighting a blowtorch to smoke it even more.  Then I sat down at one of the tables and enjoyed one of the most pleasurable experiences in my life.  It was so spontaneous, so fascinating, so bizarre, and the Cuban Sandwich was good too!

So, if you ever find yourself in Taiwan and want to try something a little unusual in the middle of the afternoon, go visit the Maverik Cafe'.  It's definitely a long journey by MRT and LRT to get there, but it's an experience you'll always remember.

A 300-Year Old Question

Ever since the invention of the first sandwich, 300 years ago, when John Montagu requested a some meat inbetween two slices of bread, we have been facing the world's most difficult question...

If I was stranded on a deserted isle, would I choose the Chicken Cubano as my Last Sandwich?

Partially because of the warm atmosphere, my answer is Yes.

Sometimes it's about the experience as much as it is about the food, and this was an exceptionally delightful experience.  I would definitely recommend Maverick Cubano's for the naturalistic atmosphere, the great customer service, and the huge variety of delicious sandwiches.

Elsa Bekmans Still Making Sandwiches

We wanted to learn more about Elsa Birgitta Bekman, and where she came from.  However, she is a riddle, wrapped in a favourite sandwich, inside two slices of ham and a single piece of cheese.  So, we had to do a little research on our own.

Humble Beginnings

First, we wanted to find out where she is originally from.  According to the V2 Records Web Site, Elsa Bekman is the daughter of a half French, half Swedish mother.  She grew up in The Netherlands, but spent a lot of time in France and Sweden, and was raised on a variety of musical styles.9

The Tibbs

It turns out that Elsa was also previously in a band called the The Tibbs, from 2012 to 2018.  According to The Tibbs web site, their music is a combination of Rhythm & Blues, Funk, Jazz, Pop and Ska, and brings a unique blend of garage soul that could be traced back to the Detroit and Philly sounds of the ’60s and ’70s.4

Apparantly, Elsa Bekman was one of the original members, and she really gave their videos an amazing amount of energy.

Elsa Bekman's Videos (Band and Solo)

Check out these two videos below by The Tibbs.

The Tibbs - Next Time  (2016)

The Tibbs - Dog Days (2016)

We can honestly say that Elsa Bekman added a ton of oomph to that band.  They have a new lead singer now, and The Tibbs are a pretty good band, but Elsa gave it that extra-something special.

In 2019, she released her 1st album, "Once in my Life", which included the song we always love to play, "You're not my Favourite Sandwich."

You're Not My Favorite Sandwich by Elsa Birgitta Bekman

We've said it before, and we'll say it again, Elsa Birgitta Bekman and Jade Welling were wonderful in this video.  And Jade's violin playing really added "flavour" to the song.6  We hope that they continue to make more tasty sandwich songs in the future!

We've added the information about her album "Once In My Life" below.  If you want to check it out, the link is below the album cover.

broodwich

The Broodwich has a cult following the rivals no other.  It initially became known from the TV Show Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and later became famous as a popular meme.  You've probably seen it before, but never realized its celebrity status.

When you examine its history through the centuries, it is becomes clear that the sandwich is inherently evil.  Today, we are going to look closely at how the sandwich became ingrained in our culture is sucha short time.

John Montagu 4th Earl of Sandwich

The sandwich was born because...

As quoted on the History.com website:

The sandwich as we know it was popularized in England in 1762 by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Legend has it, and most food historians agree, that Montagu had a substantial gambling problem that led him to spend hours on end at the card table. During a particularly long binge, he asked the house cook to bring him something he could eat without getting up from his seat, and the sandwich was born. Montagu enjoyed his meat and bread so much that he ate it constantly, and as the concoction grew popular in London society circles it also took on the Earl’s name.1 & 2

So, who is John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich?

John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, PC, FRS (13 November 1718 – 30 April 1792 was a British statesman who succeeded his grandfather Edward Montagu, 3rd Earl of Sandwich as the Earl of Sandwich in 1729, at the age of ten. During his life, he held various military and political offices, including Postmaster General, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Secretary of State for the Northern Department.3

Marcus Cafe Taipei

There is nothing cooler than a bunch of mini-burgers lying on a long plank of wood.  Walking down the street in Neihu (Taipei City), the thing that attracted me to Marcus Cafe' was it's American style look, with the brick facade and the large corporate metal doors.

The inside was even better, with the an aesthetically-pleasing atmosphere that even had Mount Rushmore and King Kong painted on their walls.  It was also very well structured and super clean.  It was the kind of place you want to hang out at for a while.

What Is A Mini-Burger?

However, I have to say that menu initally confused me.  What are these Mini-Burgers?  Can I pick two the same, and one different?  Are they only sold in a set?  However, the waitress was very friendly and accommodating, and I decided to try one of each flavor.  It was a wonderful dining experience.

Mini-Burger On A Deserted Isle

Now, the big question... If I was on a deserted isle, would I choose it as my Last Sandwich?

Ahhhh.... very close, but No.  I would not choose it as my Last Sandwich.

However, would I bring a friend and spend a few hours there eating and working on my lap top?  Yes, most definitely.  It had a great atmosphere and the food was good.  Also, they keep the place clean, which is always a big plus in my book!
