THE LAST SANDWICH
SANDWICH NEWS
Pizza Rock (搖滾披薩) in Taiwan is a staple in the what many would call the "luxury pizza shop" industry. Whether it's their delicious soup, baked pasta, or variety of pizzas, Pizza Rock always delivers on the promise of a good meal. Another staple of their menu are their assortment of a half-dozen panini sandwiches, which is what we will be focusing on today.
Why Pizza Rock Stands Out
Before we discuss sandwiches, we want to talk about what makes Pizza Rock special in Taiwan. While other popular pizza franchises, such as Dominos and Pizza Hut, have seating areas for their customers to rest and enjoy the food, they always seem to have a fast-food atmosphere, without the charm and pizazz of a typical upscale restaurant.
That's where Pizza Rock takes it to the next level. All of their restaurants have a warm, sophisticated rock n' roll feeling that gives the atmosphere a little extra charm. It's not quite the legendary Rock and Roll McDonald's or even the Hard Rock Cafe', but they definitely have a small rock and roll vibe going on. Even though it's only a few Rock posters adorning the walls, it's that extra attention to detail that makes them stand out.
How Was The Food?
Since this is a site about sandwiches, we have to make a disclaimer. We love Pizza Rock's baked pasta and soup, it is beyond delicious. In terms of an Italian restuarant in Taiwan, we highly recommend it for any international traveller. The prices are reasonable, the service is friendly, and the tables are pristine.
However, our discussion today revolves around one of Pizza Rock's sandwiches, the Caprese Grilled Cheese Panini. One of the more popular sandwiches, it is covered in mozzarella, garlic, basil, diced tomatos, and parmesan cheese. It was definitely a decent sandwich, yet the bread was a little too thick and it dulled the overall taste.
So, onto the big question: Would I eat it as my Last Sandwich?
The answer is No. However, it was still a decent sandwich.
We want to emphasize, if this was a site about baked pasta, then Pizza Rock would be the in our Top 10 of Last-Baked-Pasta lists. However, it's about sandwiches, and their sandwiches leave something to be desired.
As you know, we consider Hamburgers to be a real sandwich. Add some cheese and it becomes, quite possibly, the best sandwich ever created by man. Let's be honest, when we saw a Music Label with the name Burger Records, we thought it was one of the coolest things ever. However, after reading about what happened at the label over the last year, that adoration turned to disappointment.
About 7 months ago, we read that Burger Records was the next victim of "cancel culture" and their bands were accused of predatory behavior towards young woman. What was generally considered normal behavior by rock bands 50, 30, or even 10 years ago isn't going to fly in this age of social media. So, the label president took the bullet and agreed to part ways.
However, whoever took over the wheel at Burger Records couldn't turn that ship around, and they ceased operations in July of 2020.
Let us just say, this label wasn't just hip for their name. They also released most of their music on cassettes, which is awesome in itself. They also hosted a festival called the Burger A-Go-Go, which is beyond cool.
Honestly, I think the main reason they crashed was due to a lack of Sandwich Bands. Sad as it seems, it looks like Burger Records is gone forever.

Who is Elsa Birgitta Bekman? And why does she spell "favourite" with an extra letter?
You're Not My Favourite Sandwich may be the existential sandwich song, touching on the most basic of human foodly emotions. Truly, there are few songs that are quirky enough to stand on its own legs, and also evoke a desire for sandwich-making in the kitchen.
The Inalienable Rights Of Sandwiches
However, I have to say that the way she treats her favorite sandwich is utterly dispicable. Here's a loving sandwich that sacrifices its existance to give her pleasure, yet her only appreciation is to discard it into an open field. To make matters worse, she equates man at a higher level than sandwich, which in our LastSandwich universe is the ultimate sin. Sandwich is life. Sandwich is forever.
Who Is Elsa Bekman?
Yet, we still enjoyed Elsa's song, as well as her amazing sandwich-making ability. So, who exactly is Elsa Bekman? We Googled it to find out.
Elsa Birgitta Bekman (born September 13, 1991) is a Dutch singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, music video director and music video producer with French and Swedish roots.7

The Lyrics
You are not my favourite sandwich
Which I will chew, swallow, digest then pass it
Get sick of it
Throw it in the garbage
Then replace it with a tasty snack
Cause last time I checked
These are the only band names that I could find which referred to Sandwiches. Probably the best tasting one is Hot Tuna, because seriously, who doesn't love a Hot Tuna Sandwich?
However, while Ham Sandwiches are pretty good with melted cheese, ham by itself isn't very appetizing. On the other hand, their music is extremely delicious.
Here is our list of Top 10 Bands whose names refer to a sandwich:

Let's address the elephant in the room... who would ever imagine calling your rock band "Ham Sandwich" or anything relating to food in general?
Well, kudos to them. We think Ham Sandwich is a great name for a group! And even more amazing, they know how to select cover songs. This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) is one of Talking Heads greatest songs, and is also the centerpiece of one of the best concert movies of all-time, Stop Making Sense (1984).
Talking Heads Version
Here is a clip of that movie, where David Byrnes and Talking Heads is singing that song, along with the infamous Lamp Dance.

HamsandwicH Version
It's always hard to cover a Masterpiece, however, Ham Sandwich decided to their best to add their own spin on it.

HamsandwicH VS Talking Heads
So, who do you think did it better?
They are two very different styles, and while we applaud Ham Sandwich's rendition, nothing can ever surpass Talking Head's original... David Byrne's singing is just in a league of it's own.
Winner: Talking Heads (with HamsandwicH in close second)
One small note, we wish the fiddle player let loose a little more. If he had broke into a rendistic solo, playing in a free-style cadenza, the musical interlude would have been fuller and richer. It might have put HamsandwicH over the edge
By the way, if you want to learn more about Ham Sandwich, read both their Wikipedia page and this interesting article from the Irish Times in the Reference Section.
